You ought to get onto www.dpchallenge.com. It's pretty cool. There are closed photo contests and open photo contests, but you basically are given an assignment, and have to come up with a photo in a certain time period. You submit it, and people can comment and vote. They get some truly amazing photos there, and it's nice to get feedback from real photographers.
(Granted, as is most common in the world of photography, there are those who submit content that is not so good for general consumption, but you can screen for that kind of thing. Usually they don't sneak up on you.)
Or, you can do what Marty does and jus look at the amazing pictures, glean ideas, and enter a picture very occasionally. ;)
